Bill learned this week he has been named President of the St. Louis Browns Historical Society. He joined the Historical Society, also known as the Browns Fan Club, about 6 years ago. He was named Editor of the organization's magazine/newsletter, Pop Flies, in 2008. Bill succeeds Fred Heger who has been a board member of the organization since it's inception in 1984.
Bill says he well remembers the St. Louis Browns baseball team having attended many games in the late 1940s and early '50s. He has a number of Browns scorecards with many containing autographs of Browns' players.
The mission of the Fan Club is to preserve the history and memory of the St. Louis Browns. The Browns were the predominant sports team in St. Louis for over 24 years in the early 1900s. The Browns Historical Society is the only organization remembering a former sports team from St. Louis. The team played here for 52 years in Sportsman's Park sharing it with the Cardinals. The Browns played the Cardinals in an exciting all St. Louis World Series in 1944.
The Browns Fan Club holds an annual reunion luncheon or dinner with the next one planned for May 2011. Membership is open with a donation of $30. More information is available at their web and blog sites below.
